Why Should You do the Master Cleanse?

This is a question I get asked a lot.

There are two main reasons that people usually do the Master Cleanse (also known as the Lemonade Diet).

1) They want to do a cleanse to flush out the toxins that have come to be stored in the body.

2) They want to lose excess fat quickly (10 pounds in 10 days is the average you will lose).

Let’s examine both of these reasons and see if the Master Cleanse is a good way to do either.


First, let’s look at the benefits of detoxification and people want it so badly. The world that we live in is toxic. As we go through daily life, we accumulate toxins from the foods that we eat, the unfiltered water we drink, the air that we breathe, and even the lotions and cosmetics that we put on our skin.

These toxins are not healthy for our body or mind, and our body has ways of dealing with them and eliminating them.  Your body cleanses and eliminates toxins through your lungs, skin, urine, and through defecation.  However, in our unnaturally polluted world today, our body’s systems can’t keep pace with all the toxins that we take in.

Our world is become increasingly toxic at an unprecedented pace. Our foods are covered in pesticides and chemical preservatives, and our air, soil and water are polluted far beyond any degree that we have seen before. And the world’s toxic problem is only getting worse.

These toxins reside in your body and you don’t know why you feel tired, develop  assorted health problems that stump your doctor, and get sick.  As you continue to unknowingly poison yourself from the inside out, in time real illness, such as cancer, can develop.  All disease comes from undue strain on the body over a long period of time.  As you sludge through life, unaware of what you are doing to yourself, your body takes more and more damage from the toxins in the environment, and it builds up to terrible levels.  And you just feel sick and tired.

The Master Cleanse was designed specifically to get all that junk that is inside of you right now OUT.  It uses ingredients that help to break down the toxic waste in your body, and your body jumps at the opportunity to be able to eliminate that waste naturally.  The Master Cleanse consists of not eating solid foods and drinking only a special lemonade mixture of fresh lemons, grade B maple syrup, and cayenne pepper.  These ingredients were chosen specifically because they all have properties that will sustain you and help your body break down and get rid of waste.

Weight Loss:

It’s no secret that millions of Americans walk around carrying extra weight that they wish they weren’t carrying. People turn to the Master Cleanse because they want a quick and alternative way to take off extra weight – on average 10 pounds in 10 days for a woman, and even more for a man. A common misconception you will hear is that this is “water weight” and will come back after your cleanse is over, but this isn’t true. While you are on the cleanse, you will be drinking much more water than normal so you won’t lose any water weight.

This is how the Master Cleanse makes you lose weight:

When you consume solid food or drink other things, the digestive process of the body takes up about 25% of the body’s energy.  The reason for cutting out all solid food and other drinks during the Cleanse and using an extremely easily digestible lemonade mixture for sustenance is to free up this energy.  Your body then naturally uses the extra energy to cleanse itself- to break down long-ago stored toxins and impurities in your system and flush them out of your body.  Abstaining from solid foods also empties colon for a prolonged period of time and during this time, your body is able to cleanse the walls of your colon from long standing fecal matter that has been impacted there.

Getting this long impacted fecal matter out of your colon will probably make you lose 4-5 pounds alone.  The Cleanse isn’t a starvation fast.  The Lemonade mixture you will be drinking has sustenance and nutrition, and also has ingredients that raise your metabolism, so your body won’t go into starvation mode and begin storing fat but will release it.  You will lose excess weight as excess fat, toxins as the compacted matter of your colon are flushed out of your body.  Men usually lose two pounds a day on the Master Cleanse, and women usually one to one and a half pounds a day.  When you do off the Cleanse, the only weight you will gain back is the weight of the solid food you are now eating again as it travels through your body.  The majority of the weight you lose will stay off.

Is the Master Cleanse Safe?

A common concern about the Master Cleanse (also called the Lemonade Diet) is safety. I am not a doctor and anyone who wants to do any cleanse or juice fast should consult a doctor. That’s the same warning label you’ll find on any exercise video or weight loss program, and in my book, The Ultimate Master Cleanse.

If you have your doctor’s approval, it is safe for you. Again, I am not a doctor and I don’t know you personally so I could never tell you that it is safe for you to do.

One concern people have is about fasting – going without any “food” or calories. But the Master Cleanse isn’t a fast – the calories to sustain you come from the maple syrup. Depending on how much lemonade mixture you drink, which is up to you throughout the day, you don’t necessarily have to cut your daily calorie intake drastically. You can get 1500+ calories a day by drinking the lemonade mixture. Let your hunger and energy level be your guide.

Here is a list of people I recommend should NOT do the Master Cleanse for health or safety reasons:

1) People on medications really absolutely need to consult with a doctor. I can’t recommend anyone stop their medication and many medications need to be taken with food.

2) People with underlying health conditions also absolutely need to consult with their doctor whether they are taking medications or not. Although everyone should consult with a doctor, I can’t stress this enough for someone with any kind of medical condition.

3) People who have had transplants or that are on immune-suppressant drugs cannot do the Master Cleanse.

4) People who have a history of having eating disorders should not partake in anything that could trigger their eating disorder – such as forgoing regular meals and solid food.

With all that being said, people have been doing the Master Cleanse for the past 50 years. The most important thing is to consult with a doctor about any concerns you have before you begin. That way you know you are being safe and responsible!

What do the Ingredients of the Master Cleanse do?

Each ingredient in the Master Cleanse (otherwise known as the Lemonade Diet) was chosen for a specific reason and the ingredients also work together to provide detoxifying benefits. Read below to see what each ingredient does and learn why the Master Cleanse works as well as it does.


The lemon is an amazing fruit and an essential component of the Master Cleanse.  It will nourish you during your cleanse because it contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, copper, selenium and iron.  Lemons are high in vitamin C and also contain thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-5 and B-6, as well as protein and fiber and other trace nutrients.

Lemons are the ONLY fruit that have more anions than cations.  Anions are simply atoms that have a negative charge, and cations molecules with a positive charge.  Because the lemon has more anions, it has a composition resembling your stomachs natural digestive enzymes.  These enzymes are used not only for food but also as your body cleanses itself of dead cells and waste that has accumulated in the body from poor diet, bad habits, toxins and pollutions.  So the lemon actually helps break down this waste in the body and helps to purge impurities during your cleanse.

The lemon has several acids that help to break down calcified substances in the body like gallstones and kidney stones.  Many people report passing gallstones on the Master Cleanse that they never even knew they had.  Lemon is a natural cleansing agent for the body that breaks down and eliminates mucus.  If you find yourself coming down with a cold, and I’m speaking of any time, not specifically while on the Master Cleanse, a cup of the lemonade with cayenne pepper mixture is a great remedy.

Note:  Don’t use Meyer Lemons, otherwise known as Valley lemons, for the Master Cleanse.  They are a cross between a true lemon and a mandarin orange and don’t have the same properties of a proper lemon.

Maple Syrup:

Maple Syrup is the ingredient that gives you the fuel that will keep you going over the period of the Master Cleanse.  It contains a number of minerals and vitamins in trace amounts like potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sodium, iron, zinc, copper, tin, sulfur, and silicon.  Maple Syrup has vitamins A, B-1, B-2, B-5, B-6, biotin, folic acid and amino acids.  One tablespoon has around 55 calories, and this is where your body will be drawing your energy.

Maple Syrup has different grades, and you absolutely essentially need to use grade B, which is the highest quality and contains the nutrients you need.  You should also use organic maple syrup.  You may need to search to find organic grade B maple syrup if you live in a rural area, or order it online.

Cayenne Pepper:

Cayenne pepper is ground from the seeds and pods of red peppers of the Capsicum family.  The most active compound in these peppers in capsaicin, and this is what gives the pepper its heat.  It is high in vitamins A and C, contains B vitamins also, and contains potassium and calcium.

Cayenne is good for a variety of things- the heat makes it a natural pain reliever, it stops internal bleeding and external bleeding when applied externally, and it can even stop a heart attack when placed as a powder under the tongue!  It’s a natural stimulant (you won’t get any sort of jitters or “buzz” at all) that boosts metabolism, purifies and thins the blood thereby increasing circulation, and is helpful for digestive disorders.

As the lemon does, it also breaks up mucus in the body. That makes it beneficial to your sinuses, lungs and bronchial tubes and improves your breathing.  And it also acts as a catalyst- it makes other herbs work more effectively.

You’ll be able to find it in a majority of supermarkets, in the spice section, and organic and health food stores.  Look for cayenne that is red in color or deep orange, as that will be the freshest as its color fades with age.  To keep it freshest you should store it in a dark, cool place.

Laxatives and Salt Water Flush:

The salt water flush is made by adding two teaspoons (not tablespoons) of un-iodized sea salt to 1 quart of warm water.  This mixture is the same salinity as your blood, so as you drink this, the salt is not absorbed into your blood stream.  Unless you are deficient in salt or trace minerals, you will not take in any of the salt.  Rather, it is like an internal wash for the body.  It will pass right through you, and go right through your colon, washing you from the inside.

There are a variety of laxative teas to choose from.  A good choice is “Smooth Move.”  Make sure that the tea is not caffeinated.
